  NASA is planning a mission to redirect an asteroid in orbit around the moon. The space agency has identified a number of potential asteroid candidates. Once chosen, NASA will launch a robotic mission to visit the asteroid. When this robotic spacecraft arrives at the intended asteroid, it will pick up a multi-ton boulder and redirect it to the moon. A team of astronauts will then visit the boulder in orbit and collect samples to bring them back to earth.   The asteroid redirection mission [ARM] will begin in the early 2020s. It is part of NASA's plan to test and advance the technologies needed for the mission to Mars in the 20 30s.

Paul Hayne at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and his team used camera images and temperature measurements taken by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to map cold, permanently shadowed regions on the moon, which are thought to be the places possibly to contain ice because of their lack of exposure to sunlight. While there has been any evidence for the presence of water on the moon, these “cold traps” were previously thought to be restricted to deep, kilometers-wide craters. However, the team found that there are micro-cold traps – areas at the meter and millimeter-scale that are permanently shadowed and then could contain more accessible ice.  NASA just landed a spacecraft on an asteroid and, if everything went as planned, sucked up a sample of dust and rock from the surface. From 200 million miles away, NASA and its engineering partner, Lockheed Martin, instructed the spacecraft to descend to the surface of an area rock called Bennu. In just 5 to 10 seconds, the probe should have collected samples from the asteroid's surface. It's set to bring these pieces of Bennu back to Earth later. OSIRIS-REx, because the spacecraft is understood (short for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer), completed this "touch-and-go" operation on Tuesday evening.
